Excursion to Paestum and Salerno

A whole day tour, from Sorrento along the costal road to Castellammare di Stabia and by motorway to Salerno. This city in Medieval times was the world capital of medicine. The monastery of Benedictine Monks which most likely founded the medical school, offered the best instruction available at that time. One of the most famous medical texts was the “ Regiment Sanitas Salerni” written in Latin and translated into almost every European Language. To the East of  Salerno after the headlands of  Pontecagnano, Batttipaglia and Eboli is Paestum. One of the most important archaeological sites in the country. It was founded by the Greeks around  60 B. C. and its name derived from Poseidon (The God of Sea ) to whom it was dedicated. It was during this period that the Basilica, the Temple of  Poseidon and the Temple of Cesar were built. Free time for shopping and eating out to be arranged for.

Napoli - Solfatara

A whole day  tour, from Sorrento a one-hour drive along the costal road  to Castellammare di Stabia and from there on the motorway to Napoli. The City of Naples was founded in 600 B. C. by the Greeks, and the Romans took over in 320 B.C. it is an historical City, full of monuments, churches, building dating back centuries. The national Museum, which is one of the best archaeological museum in the world, holds most of the treasures from Pompei and Herculaneum which have been transferred there for safe keeping. There is also a priceless collection of paintings and bronze works. After visiting the Museum, we stop at the heart of a  lively quarter of the City, popularly known as “Spaccanapoli” to visit some of the most beautiful churches. The Church of Santa Chiara, with its fascinating majolica cloister in rococo-style, the Church of Gesù Nuovo with the astonishing richness of its floral marble decorations, and others wonderful churches. From there we go on to the Solfatara:
The Solfatara, the mythical entrance to the Ancient Romans' Hell, is an inactive volcano, part of the volcanic region known as Phlegrean Fields. It is famous for its steaming jets of sulphurous vapour at temperatures of 160°C, the emission of carbonic anidride and small volcanoes of boiling mud. Sulphur was extracted here in the past, and until 1800 it was a spa renowned for its mineral waters, natural saunas and mud. The Solfatara is the epicentre of the cyclic phenomenon of the rising and lowering of ground level in the Phlegrean Fields known as bradisism.
